Achievement Test Scores

Assessment

The Stanford Achievement test is one of many ways in which a child's progress is determined. Because this is the case, Jubilee Christian School, although it places great importance on this instrument as a tool of evaluation, does not "teach for the test", nor use it as a final determining factor for what children should be learning in the classroom. This is partly so because our philosophy of education is one which emphasizes the joy of learning in an integrated way. We see the value of spending time on areas of interest to children, allowing students to experience the joy of learning as much as they desire beyond the basic standard or required skill at grade level, and covering a topic thoroughly for essential understanding. Additionally, we value integrating the learning process so that the child sees the connection among the various disciplines or subject areas. Therefore, as we look at the standard test score for the student we see it as one part of the assessment process for this learning environment.

We value the following principles related to evaluation and achievement testing: Assessment and reporting the data needs to be aligned with the goals of the curriculum. Students need to be carefully taught the skills at grade level that will be evaluated. Assessment needs to take into consideration the various learning styles of students. Measuring the amount of knowledge a child has memorized is easier than assessing how well a child has done in putting together knowledge into a more complex, less structured problem solving endeavor. Process skills (writing, Math facts, computing, reading, analyzing, dramatizing, reading, etc.) lead to students developing meaning around the content, and are developmental in nature. Time for teaching skills in the learning process is vital, therefore selection of content and the process of evaluation must be made with careful consideration.
